Holidays, Astrology and Essential Oils

Now that the holidays are upon us, some may have that nagging question, “What gift do I get?” That’s  a question we all ponder at one time or another whether it’s for a holiday or birthday or some other special event.  One item you might want to purchase for someone is an aromatherapy essential oil gift. Aromatherapy, the use of pure plant essential oils, has been around for thousands of years believe it or not.  It’s not a fad, even Cleopatra used aromatic scents from plants! The essential oil’s aroma hits the limbic system part of the brain, known for triggering emotions, reactions, responses and memory recall.  This will bring subtle changes in mood, emotions and energy.  Smelling essential oils awakens that mind, body and soul connection.

A unique way to embrace that mind, body and soul connection is through astrology aromatherapy.  After all one’s personality is partially from their zodiac Sun sign.  Haven’t you met a stubborn Taurus or an indecisive Libra?

The astrology Sun sign, although not the only astrological sign, is the most common and widely referred since it descriptions your personality, your inner self.   Learning about your Sun sign is an entertaining way to discover who you are.  Pictured below is the Zen Age Astrology Perfume Oil Collection.

Aries (March 21- April 20,21), The Ram needs more joy, confidence and positivity easily achieved with the aroma of citrus especially Grapefruit.  Arians are known for not always making the best choices so the aroma of Frankincense essential oil will help encourage stability to get to making better choices.

Taurus (April 21 - May 20,21), The Bull.  Grounding Sandalwood helps calm the Bull with tranquility while the sensual floral scent of Ylang Ylang opens the Taurian heart, enhancing the generous and sensual side, awakening the spiritual senses.

Gemini (May 21,22-June 21), The Twins.  Known for their dual personality and lack of decision making, Lemon and Basil essential oils encourages mental clarity and confidence,  uplifting the Twins spirit,  awakening the soul to believe in oneself.

Cancer (June 21,22-July 21,22), The Crab.  Since they are ruled by the Moon, the nurturing,  sensitive Cancerian is affectionate and intuitive but they are also moody. Mandarin essential oil aroma helps the Crab by its breath of happiness and sweetness getting them out of their shell.

Leo (July 22- Aug 21,22) , The Lion.  On a good day the Lion is courageous and protective; on a bad day they are arrogant, cold hearted and jealous. Peaceful Lavender is perfect for those Leo bad days, it softens them Lion’s roar!

Virgo (Aug 22,23 – Sept 21,22) , The Virgin. Virgo’s are fussy, quick thinkers and observant. At times the Virgo can be selfish, and often very critical of themselves.  Rose essential oil emotionally opens the heart, allowing self love to diminish the self doubting side of Virgo.

Libra (Sept 22- Oct 21/22), The Scales. Librans seek equality, harmony, and balance. They have an innocent way about them that makes them very approachable and flirtatious. Cedarwood is a great  essential oil for grounding, balance and confidence.  It inspires steadiness for the see-saw Libra.

Scorpio (Oct 22/23- Nov 21/22), The Scorpion. The clean refreshing whiff of Orange encourages an aura of joy and bliss, in turn, softening the potential sting of the Scorpio.   Often this aroma has an emotionally balancing influence on a moody and obsessive Scorpio.

Sagittarius (Nov 22,23- Dec 21,22), The Archer.  Sagittarians are driven and outgoing yet blunt and at times insensitive. Bergamot citrus aroma assists in bringing laughter to the Sagittarian, while emphasizing the Sagittarians drive and strength.

Capricorn (Dec 22- Jan 20/21), The Goat. Capricorns have a need for purpose and direction. They are the resident conventional Sun sign, cerebral and cautious. They are goal setters with definitive guidelines as they need structure.  Pine’s clean, woody leafy aroma resonates with the Capricorn month of December, January. Look at a Pine tree, notice its straight trunk,  reminding us of the logical and practical Capricorn.

Aquarius (Jan 21- Feb 20/21), The Water Bearer. Aquarius often is referred to as the Bohemian sign. Aquarians are originally original, humanitarian beings who are love equally, are social and aloof.  They can be extroverts while being introverted. Rosewood essential oil often associated with the Crown Chakra as is the Aquarian. The aroma is grounding perfect for this Air sign, and has a balancing effect on the Water Bearer promoting a feeling of well being.

Pisces (Feb 21,22- March 20), The Fish. Pisces are selfless, forgiving, imaginative, extremely sensitive, loyal, wishy-washy, overcome by others feelings.  Lime essential oil helps the Pisces with liveliness, bliss, and positivity.   It is a cheerful scent that lifts the Pisces out of a sober mood.

Capricorn Sun Sign and Essential Oils

Capricorn, 10th sign of the zodiac falls between Dec 22- Jan 20.  Symbolized by the Goat, Capricorn is a Cardinal Earth sign meaning they are ambitious, creative initiators with a grounded practical energy.  Capricorns are conventional, cerebral, cautious, hard working and reliable.  Many people go to a Capricorn because they are the “rock” they need to lean on.   Capricorns have a need for purpose and direction which comes from their ruling planet Saturn.  Saturn, in astrology represents structure, boundaries, time, caution and wisdom.    Capricorns take on too much and deplete themselves, always needing to be needed.  I’ve known a few Capricorns who were guilty of this, always worried about security in all forms: financial, emotional and physical, not just for themselves but for others as well. This can be exhausting to anyone on the outside looking it.  Capricorns are goal setters with definitive guidelines as they need structure.  More often than not, once a goal is reached they will soldier on to higher and better aspirations.   The Saturn power helps the Capricorn with discipline, strength and staying power to achieve goals they set.

You will find a Capricorn is quite active with hiking, running, you name it they are involved in it or at least have tried it.  With all this movement they may have to tendency to complain about their joints and muscles.

The Capricorn ego can get on the nerves of others, as they believe their way is the best way, no matter what way it is! They are often hard on themselves, being a perfectionist who is never satisfied; the Cap needs to remember they possess a goofy goat inside.

Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides) essential oil aroma is grounding, earthy, heavy yet sweet, often is associated with the Capricorn.   Commonly referred to as the Oil of Tranquility in Sri Lanka, this essential oil is superb for the Capricorn who is burnt out physically, mentally and emotionally.  Vetiver essential oil is also associated with the root chakra, as is the Capricorn.  Another purpose of Vetiver is alleviating muscle and joint discomfort, indeed useful for the active Goat!  Being secretive and somewhat of a loner are two more Capricorn traits.  Vetiver can stir those deep soul secrets, softening those emotional blockages by awakening the Capricorn to recognize they are actually not alone in the world. Vetiver promotes wisdom, as does Saturn, self value and integrity.

Lemon (Citrus limon) with its high vibration can boost any sour mood with joy. Its light, clean, fresh aroma engages the psyche with liveliness and an aura of happiness.  This invigorating scent bestows clarity, awareness and direction to those to inhale the aroma.  A wonderful olfactory morning treat to help set the tone for the day ahead.     Lemon can also be calming yet uplifting to those washed-out Capricorns who are emotionally strained. Capricorns need to lighten up at times and the lemon aromatic bliss can facilitate that.

Pine (Pinus sylvestris) has a clean, woody leafy aroma that resonates with the Capricorn month of December, January. When I look at a Pine tree I notice its straight trunk, reminding of the logical and practical Capricorn. Pine encourages direction, self confidence, positivity, patience and strength assisting  Capricorn with their task lists.  Pine is also known to have stimulating action on circulation which may help with aches and pains Capricorns often feel – try a mixture of Pine and Vetiver diluted with an unscented massage oil.

Fun fact: Elvis Presley was a Capricorn

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) Essential Oil

The word Ylang Ylang comes from the Philippine word “alangilang” which refers to the ‘flowers that flutter in the breeze’.  This tall tropical tree is native to tropical Asia, especially Indonesia and the Philippines grows about 60 feet high, grows wonderfully fragrant flowers that are pink, yellow and mauve in color and  hang merrily from the branches.

The essential oil is produced by steam or water distilled from the flower petals of the Cananga tree and has a very deep passionate middle note aroma.  This floral scent envelopes you in peace and tranquility, encouraging warmth, sensuality, enthusiasm and self confidence,  balancing out the right and left side of the brain, soothes nerves, balances sebum production and enhances intimate desires. In fact, in Indonesia, the flowers are spread on the bed of newly married couples on the wedding night-hmmmm.  Spiritually the engulfing aroma may soften a hardened  heart and releases anger in turn creating serenity.

Historically in the Victorian age, the oil was used to encourage hair growth by applying it to the scalp. Like many essential oils there are different grades of Ylang Ylang.  The first distillation is called Ylang-ylang extra, which is the top grade that is often used in high class perfumery, whereas the lower grades (Ylang Ylang III) are used in soap, candles and detergents.

Cananga odorata  is also  known for its antibacterial, sedative, nervine, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, antidepressant, circulatory stimulant properties.   Essential oils that blend well with Ylang Ylang are patchouli, sandalwood, rosewood, vetiver,  clove, chamomile, ginger, jasmine and citrus oils such as lemon, mandarin and bergamot.

For a pleasant spritzer try this recipe:

1oz purified water or alcohol
6 drops Bergamot
3 drops Ylang Ylang
2 drops Sandalwood

Sagittarius Sun and Essential Oils

Sagittarius is the 9th zodiac sign  and the last fire element sign which falls between Nov 22-Dec 21. Keep in mind you may see varying dates year to year but it is usually no more than a day difference.  If you’re birthday falls on a cusp (the day the Sun moves into another sign) you will most likely have personality traits of both Sun signs.

The Sagittarius glyph /symbol is The Archer-Centaur, half man, half horse with a bow and arrow. This 2 part symbol in my perspective represents man’s mind in the driver’s seat so to speak with the stamina of a horse to successfully perform the ideas or plans man makes.  The bow and arrow represents whether the Sagittarian has good  “aim” or not, focus is one trait that is not so strong in a Sag.

This freedom seeker, fire mutable sign, is ruled by Jupiter, a planet that represents the higher mind, expansiveness, generosity, wisdom, justice, faith and vision. Jupiter is also known to be the planet of luck and joy.  Sagittarians adapt to situations around them quite well.  They are masters at turning around negative situations into positive with their wisdom and optimistic insight.   I know a few Sagittarians, all of which possess a spiritual, open mindedness that I enjoy. I dubbed them as my personal philosophers who, at times, get on their proverbial soap box and preach.

Sagittarius is a mentally oriented sign therefore they make great teachers, and counselors. They are naturally happy go lucky, fair-minded, honest and cheerful.  Life is a journey for the Sag, always traveling, exploring, and meeting new people sharing stories and ideas. On the other hand the Sag can be uncommitted, restless, hot headed, argumentative, tactless, and critical.   Sagittarians are not particularly romantic, and are somewhat relationship phobic, but they do enjoy the thrill of the chase with a stimulating and energizing mate.  As a friend, they are always there to cheer you up with their hopefulness, funny stories and genuine spirit.
I like to associate the Sagittarian with Marjoram (Origanum marjorana) essential oil for its soothing warmth. Marjoram aroma holds a calming confidence, that’s sincere and direct while keeping mental strains and anger at bay.  Marjoram essential oil and Sagittarius are often associated with the Third Eye chakra of vision, wisdom, spirituality and intuition.  This essential oil is also known for its topical analgesic properties which is helpful for the active Sagittarius who may complain about muscle strains and sprains. Marjoram is also noted to be associated with Sagittarians ruling planet, Jupiter.
Also associated with the Fire element, Bergamot (Citrus bergamia), by far, is a scent that will bring good cheer, strength and joy to any soul. It’s an aroma that has a reputation for calming frazzled nerves while uplifting the soul and works wonders for a restful sleep.    This fresh citrus scent assists in bringing laughter to the sometimes hot headed Sagittarian, while emphasizing the Sagittarians drive and strength.  Embracing the aroma may emotionally open the heart to receive and accept love which is helpful for a heart which might have been closed off.

Since Sagittarians are spiritual beings, Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi) is a good choice for them. Although Spikenard has a pungent, musty aroma that many do not like initially, its depth is warm, deep and balancing.  With this, spikenard encourages inner balance of emotional, spiritual and physical energies.  Like its calming herb cousin Valerian,

Nardo is also recognized for its soothing, grounding and harmonizing ways.

Scorpio Sun Sign and Essential Oils

Scorpio (Oct 23- Nov 22), The Scorpio

Inhaling plant essential oils is a pleasant way to alter one’s mood. There is a connection between our sense of smell and our mood, response and emotion.  We all have our flaws, and personality hiccups, making for an interesting world.  Every zodiac sun sign has its personality traits, the good, the bad and the ugly. Taking time to understand your own Sun sign or a Sun sign of another person may help you connect  with that person better.

Now is the time for the Scorpio Sun sign so let’s begin… They slitter away, ruthless, secretive and quick tempered….oh look a Scorpio! Fret no more, those born during the Scorpio Sun are also known for their sensual, magnetic, passionately caring, goal oriented and dynamic side.  If you know someone who is a  Scorpio Sun sign, as I do, then you are never quite sure what side of them you are going to be faced with, similar to a Gemini Twin in that regard. Scorpios are also deeply emotional, thereby, often associated with the 2nd  chakra, the sacral chakra.  Some personality traits of the Scorpio come from its ruling planets: Pluto representing transformation, fearlessness, and personal power; and Planet Mars, the fire planet of raw battling energy. This creates a deep, sometimes, destructive sign.   Scorpios need to be careful not to explode, so it’s best for them to have an outlet for dealing with resentment, anger or deep insecurity.

Scorpio is a Fixed Water sign. With this element combination the Scorpio needs security and makes the most of planning, building and achieving while maintaining their emotions in a fluid and variable way.  Scorpio also remind me of another Water sign member, Cancer, the Crab, because both are temperamental and hide their soft, vulnerable side underneath the hard shell.  Scorpios have the drive, and endurance to achieve while keeping up with a flowing ease of motion. Let’s not forget that Scorpios are also resourceful survivors who investigate everything.  Makes for a perfect private investigator!
Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata), usually associated with the heart chakra is known for its passionate, sensual warmth, softening those with a hard coated heart. Ylang ylang aroma also encourages self confidence, relieving jealousy.   The deep stimulating intense sensual scent may entice a Scorpio to dance the Rumba...something I believe they would enjoy!

The clean refreshing whiff of Orange (Citrus sinensis) encourages an aura of joy and bliss, in turn, softening the potential sting of the Scorpio.   Often this aroma has an emotionally balancing influence on a moody and obsessive Scorpio.  Its zesty fragrance is courageous, light hearted and energizing.  I have yet to come across a person who did not like Orange. Children especially love the smell and it instills a sunny disposition.

Black pepper (Piper nigrum) has strength, warmth and spirit, encouraging flexibility, stamina and comfort with just the right amount of “spice” for our Scorpio friend!   It allows emotional openness to express love and helps counteract anger and irritability.  If black pepper essential oil can speak it would say " I want happiness".

A fun fact: Pablo Picasso was a Scorpio.

A fruity-mint, uplifting, yet centering aroma can be found with Zen Age Scorpio Botanical roll on. To purchase or for more information please visit www.TheZenAge.comAlso available are personalized botanical blends made special just for you.

Eucalyptus Globulus

Well, here we go, it’s Fall season.  Well not exactly for folks in FL, it’s still 90 degrees! But for those who are feeling the chill and maybe a sniffle it’s time to diffuse Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) essential oil.

Best known for its therapeutic actions of antibacterial, analgesic, antiseptic, decongestant, astringent, expectorant, febrifuge, antirheumatic, antispasmodic and antineuralgic.   Perfect to diffuse in the air to help with bronchitis, coughs, decongestant, respiratory infections, sinus infections/congestion and colds ;  dilute and use topically to relieve insect bites , muscular aches and pains, and help headaches. Those with asthma, epilepsy or hypertension use caution as the aroma of Eucalyptus may be over stimulating.

It’s also good for purifying the air not just from germs but from negative energy.  The aroma is somewhat sharp , and camphor like. A history tidbit: Back in World War 1 eucalyptus oil was in high demand because it was used to help control meningitis outbreak and was used for the influenza virus of 1919.

Spiritually speaking since Eucalyptus has an affinity for the lungs, it’s a good oil to diffuse to help with sadness to help restore a positive outlook. It’s a scent of newness  and freedom.

For the home or office diffuse pure plant essential oils of eucalyptus, lemon, and thyme  to purify the air of germs.  Remember synthetic won’t do what pure plant essential oils do!

Peppermint Essential Oil

Hmmmm, the smell of pure peppermint essential oil makes me smile, reminding me of candy canes and those little red and white hard candies you find in restaurants.

Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) essential oil has a minty, sharp, cool, stimulating and refreshing scent that pleases the senses. A perennial herb in the Labiatea plant family found its way to the USA in the early 19th century from southern Europe.  Since ancient times the plant has been cultivated in Japan and China and in fact there is evidence of its use in an Egyptian tomb dating back to 1000 BC. Wow, can you believe that!

Its dark green serrated leaf is steam distilled for its oil, which is not really an "oil" and does not have an "oily'' feel.  The essential oil from a plant is its "essence"; its heart and soul; its life source; sort of like what our blood or lymphatic system is to us.

Peppermint plant is great to have in an herb garden because of its insecticide properties and, of course, it’s beauty.

Some known properties of peppermint oil are analgesic ( relieves or reduces pain), antiseptic (destroys or controls pathogenic bacteria), antispasmodic (prevents and eases spasms and cramps), astringent (tightens tissues), carminative (settles digestive system), cephalic (clears and stimulates the mind), decongestant (relieves or reduces congestion), expectorant (expels respiratory system mucus), febrifuge (reduces high body temperature), hepatic (stimulates liver), nervine (strengthens or tonifies nervous system) , stimulant, vasoconstrictor (causes contraction of blood vessel walls).

Peppermint aroma encourages clarity, awareness, revitalization, self acceptance, and concentration.  Blends well with the following essential oils: rosemary, eucalyptus, spearmint, black pepper, lavender, pine, lemon and grapefruit.

Various useful tips: Peppermint is a great essential oil to diffuse in the car or at the office.  By simply inhaling it can alleviate a headache, motion sickness, nausea, congestion as well as improve concentration and mental clarity.  You can mix it with an unscented massage oil and rub into the neck, back and temples for headaches. It’s cooling effects can cut hot flashes and even keep ants away when sprayed where ants and beetles wonder. I use a spray of peppermint and witch hazel for those hot summer days. It helps cool me off and repels bugs! I even spray my feet so the ants don’t bite. I also found putting 2 drops of peppermint mixed in a few drops unscented massage oil then rubbed all over my abdomen and inside my belly button helps alleviate a stomach ache.

For those wanting to use this in a roll on for perfume, peppermint is a top note with a high/strong odor intensity aroma. It can be overpowering so my suggestion when blending start with just 1 drop and see how your blend's aroma develops. You can always add a drop but you can't take it away!

Libra Sun Sign and Essential Oils

Libra (Sept 23- Oct 22), The Scales

Has someone ever asked you, “What’s your sign?”.  Well, what they are asking for is your Sun sign; it’s the sign that correlates to when you were born.  The zodiac Sun sign, although not the only astrological sign, is the most common and widely referred since it descriptions your personality, your inner self.   Learning about your Sun sign is an entertaining way to discover who you are.  After all, haven’t you asked yourself “Who am I”? I have many times. This curiosity prompted me to learn about astrology and how the planets alignment at the time of my birth produced, to some extent, a personality diagram or map  thereby, shedding some light on the subject- me. I learned in my studies that essential oils have personalities and energy and astrology helps pinpoint personality aspects, whether they are good, bad or indifferent.  So combining the two modalities was an innovative way to learn about myself.  In addition to essential oils I use Flower Essences.  Even though flower essences work energetically there is no scent. I personally use flower essences for myself and find great results. But in this article I will only cover essential oils.

When smelling essential oils, the aroma hits the limbic system part of the brain, known for triggering emotions, reactions, responses and memory recall. This will bring subtle changes in mood, emotions and energy. With that said, it’s a good idea to mention there may be times when you do not like a certain scent.  Be open and try the essential oil another time, you might be surprised to find you like it.   I believe your body, mind and spirit knows what it needs and when, so trust in the process for we are always evolving.

There are many essential oils I can write about in relation to the Libra Sun sign but here some I like most. Keeping this in mind, let’s begin.

Libra falls between Sept 22,23 and Oct21, 22, although you may see varying dates, since the Sun moves at a slightly different speed year to year so a sign may start or end on a different day then it did in a prior. However, it is usually no more than a day difference.  If you’re birthday falls on a cusp (the day the Sun moves into another sign) you will most likely have personality traits of both Sun signs.

Balance, balance, balance….is what a Libra needs, no wonder the symbol for Libra is The Scales! A Cardinal Element with an Air quality means the Libras are doers, and initiators who take action and enjoy their freedom.   Many times, a Libra person is often attractive, poised, idealistic, charming, fair-minded, diplomatic and a peacemaker.   Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is well known for its peaceful calming affects assisting with patience and balance. Always striving for the best future Libras need to remember to take a breath and live in the moment. Lavender encourages comfort, security and acceptance.

Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica) is one of my favorite essential oils for grounding, balance and confidence.  It inspires steadiness for the see-saw Libra.  The aromatic scent brings compassion when the Libra can be a little disconnected emotionally being the diplomatic type. Cedarwood is also wonderful to ease any fears or insecurities. Even though freedom is important to a Libra they fear being alone.  Libras are also a tower of strength for many which mimics the Cedarwood quality.

Libra is ruled by the love planet of Venus. Libras make romantic partners and are very social.  In astrology Venus is about love, self worth, and values.  Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) is often associated with the Planet Venus and the Heart (4th) Chakra. The aroma promotes centering and tranquil properties helping with moodiness, indecision and confusion.  The Geranium personality desires harmony and security, and is often friendly and comforting to those around them just as a Libra. Indecisiveness is a drawback for the Libran, hence the Scales. Regularly weighing situation, flopping from one side to the other or always being “on the fence”  Libras are a source of frustration in others due to their vacillation.  But on the other hand Libras have clear opinions and solid beliefs, wherein they may become overbearing and very calculating but quite often in a playful good natured sort of way. Once they make up their mind, its full steam ahead with blinders on.  Libras make good counselors, advisors, attorneys, promoters, and business partners. A fun fact: Mahatma Gandhi was a Libra.
